Multiple Teams · Boys Basketball Rallies To Beat Santa Fe

Good Morning Mustangs,

Last night, your Mustangs traveled down Hwy 6 to take on the Indians from Santa Fe HS.  In what was a homecoming for Coach Owens and Coach Marburger, the Mustangs looked to get in the win column for the first time in this young season.  Before the Varsity took the court, they were given a great speech by Coach Owens’ best friend and former teammate, who is currently battling ALS.  In those moments, everyone realized that what we are doing is more than just coaching/playing the game of basketball.

Before the main event, the Freshman B and Sophomore teams each got their first wins on the season, as they easily dispatched the Indians A and JV teams.  The B team never trailed, and the Super Sophs rallied from an early deficit to pull away late to get a good victory on the road.

Coming into the Varsity game, Coach Owens was hoping to see his kids start out fast and shake the early season rust.  Unfortunately, the Mustangs continued to have the shooting blues.  The shots that were falling all fall continued to not find the nylon.  To make matters worse, the Indians came out with energy from the home crowd to take an early lead.  The Mustangs scored 7 points in the first quarter, and trailed the Indians by 7 after the first 8 minutes.  In the second quarter, the Mustangs finally got the first 3’s from Tanner Bandini on the young season, but failed to get much else against Santa Fe’s extended 2-3 zone.  At the break, the Mustangs trailed the Indians 26-17.

In the third, the Mustangs started to crank up the pressure and make some shots.  Senior Alex Dehoyos scored 6 of his 14, and Tanner hit 3 more threes to bring his total to five on the night.  After trailing the first two quarters, the Mustangs took a 34-31 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

The final frame featured the Mustangs shooting a lot of free throws (14-26 on the night) to put the game out of reach and play keep away from the Indians.  As the final buzzer sounded, the Mustangs gave Coach Owens his first victory as the Mustangs head coach with a final score of 52-44.  After the game, Coach Owens was quoted as saying “he would rather take an ugly, grind it out to the finish victory, than a pretty loss”.  With the win the Mustangs pushed their record to 1-1 this season heading in to the New Caney tournament this Thursday-Saturday.

If you are traveling around Houston and want to see your Mustangs in action, below are the teams who are playing this weekend.  We would like to wish football good luck on Friday for their game against Dawson at The Rig.

Multiple Teams · Mustangs fall to Strake Jesuit 65-55

New fwood bballGood Afternoon Mustangs,

On Saturday your Boy’s Basketball program officially got underway, as the Mustangs traveled down Beltway 8 to take on the Crusaders of Strake Jesuit. The Mustangs were playing their first game under new Head Coach Cliff Owens. The shorthanded Mustangs took on a big and physical Strake that were also playing their first game of the year. Both teams had trouble finding a rhythm to start, and after a sluggish first quarter, the scored was 8-6 in favor of the Crusaders. Both teams started to find the nylon in the second quarter, with Mark Ranostaj (Sr.) leading the Mustangs with 6. Unfortunately for the Mustangs, we had one of our worst shooting performances to open the season, and at the end of two, the Crusaders led 24-20.

In the 3rd quarter, the Crusaders went on a run and outpaced the Mustangs 23-15 and led by a score of 47-35. The Mustangs had their highest scoring quarter in the 4th, but were not able to get stops when they were needed. In the end, the Mustangs fell by a score of 65-55. The Mustangs were led in scoring by Alex Dehoyos (17) and Gracen McGregor (12). In his post game speech, Coach Owens gave credit to a very good Strake team. They were big and physical and made stop when they needed to. Coach Owens was impressed at how the Mustangs held their own and were really just a couple of made shots away from turning the game around.

Before the the Varsity game, the JV 7 battled all game and came away with a great win against the Crusaders. The Freshman A fought hard, but ultimately came up short. The Mustangs will be back in action tomorrow, as we travel down to Santa Fe HS to take on the Indians. The Fresh B and Sophomore teams will take on Santa Fe’s A and JV teams. Game times for tomorrow nights games will be 4:30/6:00/7:00.
