On Saturday your Boy’s Basketball program officially got underway, as the Mustangs traveled down Beltway 8 to take on the Crusaders of Strake Jesuit. The Mustangs were playing their first game under new Head Coach Cliff Owens. The shorthanded Mustangs took on a big and physical Strake that were also playing their first game of the year. Both teams had trouble finding a rhythm to start, and after a sluggish first quarter, the scored was 8-6 in favor of the Crusaders. Both teams started to find the nylon in the second quarter, with Mark Ranostaj (Sr.) leading the Mustangs with 6. Unfortunately for the Mustangs, we had one of our worst shooting performances to open the season, and at the end of two, the Crusaders led 24-20.
In the 3rd quarter, the Crusaders went on a run and outpaced the Mustangs 23-15 and led by a score of 47-35. The Mustangs had their highest scoring quarter in the 4th, but were not able to get stops when they were needed. In the end, the Mustangs fell by a score of 65-55. The Mustangs were led in scoring by Alex Dehoyos (17) and Gracen McGregor (12). In his post game speech, Coach Owens gave credit to a very good Strake team. They were big and physical and made stop when they needed to. Coach Owens was impressed at how the Mustangs held their own and were really just a couple of made shots away from turning the game around.
Before the the Varsity game, the JV 7 battled all game and came away with a great win against the Crusaders. The Freshman A fought hard, but ultimately came up short. The Mustangs will be back in action tomorrow, as we travel down to Santa Fe HS to take on the Indians. The Fresh B and Sophomore teams will take on Santa Fe’s A and JV teams. Game times for tomorrow nights games will be 4:30/6:00/7:00.
